$69.00

1874 Cr.UG51 $737.50 The State of Missouri War Claim Certificate from Jefferson, MO.

At the end of the Civil War, the Missouri Defense Fund was exhausted. In 1874, the Missouri legislature passed a law "to audit and adjust the war debt of the State". This act was approved on March 19, 1874. By an agreement with the federal government, claims were to be filed with and approved by the state, and then forwarded with proof to Washington, D.C. Upon verification of proper proof, the federal government remitted funds to the state, and the state paid the approved claimants. The federal government soon uncovered widespread irregularities and fraud connected with these claims and refused to make further payments, putting an end to the payment of any additional Missouri war claims.

This war claim is printed with a green tint over the face of the note and has an ornate green reverse. Liberty stands with a pike and shield on the lower left. At the center is the state seal, bisecting the "State of Missouri" title.

This certificate grades Extremely Fine / About Uncirculated.

It measures ~ 7.75" x 3.5".
